THE BEST OF YOU IS YET TO COME
ANXIETY AND STRESS MANAGEMENT
I have a special interest in helping people to manage their anxiety and stress so that they can live a life that they enjoy and have a positive, helpful way of dealing with life’s ups and downs. Through my hypnotherapy training and practice; my pharmacist training and practice; my psychology degree studies; and my training as an Anxiety UK Approved Therapist I have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in helping people to manage their anxiety and stress.
Most people experience stress and anxiety at some point in their lives. Stress is a perfectly normal response of the body to some type of threat. It is the body’s response designed to energise you, to help you take action and ensure your survival. Stress usually goes away once you solve the problem stressing you out. The stress response can be physical and/or psychological and the combination of reactions to stress is known as the fight /flight/ freeze response because it evolved as a survival mechanism, enabling people to react quickly to life threatening situations. Unfortunately, the body can also overreact to stresses that are not life threatening such as traffic jams, work pressure and family difficulties. Stress can be both good and bad. Good stress motivates you to accomplish tasks to do them well and to concentrate on activities. However, overwhelming and chronic stress is not good for psychological or physical health. The drip-drip effect of lots of seemingly small stresses can begin to snowball resulting in chronic stress.
Anxiety has symptoms that stay with you, even after you tackle the underlying problems. Anxiety may be rooted in a previous experience, relate to a specific activity or situation, or be generalised in nature, where there is no apparent trigger or cause.
Physical symptoms
- faster, irregular or more noticeable heartbeat
- feeling lightheaded and dizzy
- headaches
- chest pains
- loss of appetite
- feeling tense or nervous
- being unable to relax
- worrying about the past or future
- feeling tearful
- not being able to sleep
- not being able to enjoy your leisure time
- difficulty looking after yourself
- problems concentrating at work
- struggling to form or maintain relationships
- worried about trying new things
Often, we do not know why we are feeling anxious, we just experience side effects such as a racing heart, feeling jittery and unable to focus and even having panic attacks. You may feel worried, tense or afraid about things that are about to happen, or which you think could happen in the future.
Unlike stress there are several diagnosable types of anxiety including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), social anxiety, performance anxiety, panic disorders and phobias.
How does Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help?
During our sessions I will help you understand how our brains and thoughts create feelings of anxiety and what you can do to change unhelpful thought patterns so that you can manage anxiety and stress. This brain-based therapy enables you to have a greater understanding of your condition and how you can move forward to a healthier, happier you.
During our sessions together we will talk about how you would like life to be and how you would like to feel. Then, together we will work towards a tailor-made plan to enable you to take small achievable steps towards your goals. We will talk about the chemicals that we produce in our brain that help us to feel calm, relaxed, confident, in control and happy. Together we will look at how you can generate a constant flow of these chemicals so that you can enjoy a happy and calm life.
During the talking part of our sessions, I will ask you specifically designed questions to challenge your negative unhelpful thinking patterns and questions that help you to rewire the brain to help you think and react to events in a different, positive, more helpful, calm way. We will look at the changes that you can make in your life that will help you to achieve what you want to achieve and to be the person you want to be, the person you can be.
Sessions are consolidated with hypnosis which helps bring about therapeutic change at a subconscious level to your behavioural responses to everyday life. Hypnosis during the sessions will help you to relax and allow your mind to become calm and focused on finding positive solutions to help you move forwards.
I will teach you different relaxation and coping techniques that you can practise and use outside the therapy room in your everyday life. In this way, you will build your own anxiety management ‘toolkit’ that works for you.

”I definitely recommend Caroline. She helped me with my anxiety, issues with my appearance as well as my phobia for needles. I now know how to cope with my anxiety, feel more confident in situations I previously struggled with and have also had 6 travel injections without crying or panic attacks!! Caroline made me feel at ease and more relaxed with every session, thank you so much!" SF (Plymouth)
"After trying, unsuccessfully for quite a while, to overcome my negative issues, I found Caroline’s help of great benefit. She is very encouraging and open to looking at problems and their causes with a positive and fresh approach. Each step is explained and discussed clearly. I now feel a much stronger and more positive person, able to deal with my issues, using the techniques she has given me. It’s been a very beneficial experience and I’ve learnt to take control and relax again." DT (Plymouth)
"Having suffered for a while from anxiety related to my upcoming driving test, I decided to try hypnotherapy. Caroline took the time to call me and explain what it was, how it worked, and the benefits of it. Because I got such a good feeling from this initial consultation, I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Unlike any other therapy I have ever experienced, Caroline focused on the positives, making me feel uplifted and happy after each session. Instead of labelling me as "suffering from low self-esteem" or "depressed", she made me feel like a normal person who needed help overcoming one of life's stresses. She helped me gain confidence in my own abilities, and to overcome the overwhelming nervousness I felt when thinking about my test. I ended up passing first time with only two minors.
In the past, I feel as though therapists didn't really seem to care about my situation. I have been put on waiting lists for months or been told that my full-time job would be a problem because they only work school hours. Caroline was extremely accommodating and managed to work around my busy schedule, which was so helpful. I could not recommend her more!" MH (Plymouth)
